Anderson, CA (October 17, 2009) - Veteran driver Troy Vandenbilche (Golden, BC) and standout sophomore driver Cameron Hayley (Calgary, AB) clinched their respective Baby Grand stock car division championships at the Grand National Championship weekend that ran this weekend at Shasta Raceway Park in Anderson, California. The #80 Vandenbilt Auto Body Chevrolet Monte Carlo driver Vandenbilche claimed both the Western Pro Division and the Masters titles. Hayley added the Western Junior Pro Division championship to his 2009 Baby Grand Stock Car Association of Canada championship title for the #24 Cabinets by Hayley Chevrolet Monte Carlo team. Canadian drivers turned in strong performances at the season ending Grand National event. The race was won by Hayley with Vandenbilche right behind in second. Lethbridge, AB driver Sarah-Jo Paquette in her #63 Relay Trucking Chevrolet Monte Carlo was 5th and the #10 Cabinets by Hayley Chevrolet Monte Carlo driver, Dale Edwards (Cochrane, AB) was 7th. Kyle Vriesinga (Vernon, BC) in the #7 Home Building Centre Vernon Dodge Charger was involved in a mid race incident and did not finish the race.
This marks the fourth consectutive year that the Pro Divison title has been won by a Canadian based driver. Michael Kipp (Leduc, AB) had back to back championships in 2008 and 2007 and Calgary, AB driver Rick Johnston, in 2006, was the the first Canadian to win the title. Fifty one drivers from the Western United States and Canada competed in MMRA sanctioned events in 2009. Canadians claimed 5 of the top 7 positions in the Pro Division and 1st, 5th and 8th in the Junior Pro Division. The annual MMRA awards gala was held on Sunday following the race as part of the Grand National Weekend in California. Hard charging Calgary, AB driver Robert Stone was recipient of the Western Pro Division Rookie of the Year award. The fifteen year old driver of the #6 Monster Energy Chevrolet Monte Carlo finished seventh overall in the Pro Division. Long time Baby Grand supporter, team owner and BGSCA executive, Gerry Paquette (Calgary, AB) was recognized with the Road Warrior award.
